Ever wondered why your eyes are the same as your mother’s? Or different to your siblings’? Perhaps the colour changes during the day, or in different light? Eyes are fascinating for a million and one different reasons, but especially for their unique colours. Have you ever thought why eyes are different colours? Read on to find out!
What gives eyes their colour?
The rainbow magic all happens in the iris, which is the coloured part of your eye. The colour of your iris is determined by the amount of melanin pigmentation. The more pigment, the darker the iris.
Why are brown eyes so common?
Did you know that over 55% of the global population has brown eyes? In fact, it’s hypothesised that over 10,000 years ago, all humans had brown eyes only. It’s believed that a genetic mutation of the pigmentation is responsible for blue, grey, green and other lighter-coloured eyes.
Are brown eyes healthier than non-brown eyes?
Pigment melanin is responsible for the colour of your eye, but it also serves the vital purpose of protecting them from the sun’s UV rays. Therefore, darker eyes are generally less sensitive to the sun than lighter eyes. It’s important that no matter the colour of your eyes, you take precaution in the sun by wearing sunglasses. Even though darker eyes fare better in the harsh sunlight, their natural protection is not equivalent to the protection offered by UV treated lenses.
How is eye colour inherited?
When babies are first born, they generally have clear or blue eyes. By the age of three, we have generally developed the full concentration of melanin, and our eyes reach their true colour. In some cases, the eyes may change colour later in life. Below is a chart on the likelihood of a child’s eye colour based on their parents’ eye colours (Credit: SittingAround).
Ultimately, no eye colour is better than the other. Whether your eyes are brown, blue, grey, or purple (yes, some people do have naturally purple eyes!), your eyes should be treated with the same care and awareness. It’s important to get regular eye checks and be aware of any visible changes that seem out of the ordinary.
