What is 20/20 Vision?

No doubt you’ve heard of 20/20 vision… but are you wondering what exactly it means? Let’s us tell you!

Vision ability is measured by using a Snellen eye chart. These charts check how clear you eye sight is. You’ve probably seen one on the wall of your optometrist – it’s a white poster with black letters that decrease in size, creating lines of letters. During the eye exam, the patient will sit a specified distance from the eye chart, generally 20 metres.

The distance the patient was sitting from the eye chart will be noted against the smallest line they were able to read on the Snellen chart. This outcome can then be compared to the distance from which the average person reads the same line of letters. The results are then expressed as a fraction, with the patient’s distance on top and the average person’s distance on the bottom, therefore, 20/20.

20/20 distance essentially means ‘normal’ distance vision, It’s not to be confused with perfect vision, as some people have distance vision abilities better than 20/20, but it’s a good way to measure normality.
