You've probably heard the term "polarised" when it comes to talk about lenses, glasses and optometry. In this blog, we'll explain exactly what polarisation is and why it's so useful for your eye health.
What are polarised lenses? Polarised lenses are unique to any other lens type, because they have the ability to block blinding glare. Glare is what happens when light bounces off a surface, creating light waves that are horizontal and vertical. Usually surfaces absorb or reflect light waves, and when it comes to reflective surfaces like water, ice or glass, at the right angle, some of the light becomes polarised. This means that only the vertical light waves are absorbed, but the horizontal waves bounce off and strike the eyes intensely. That's where polarised lenses come in. They have the ability to remove this glare since they're laminated with tiny vertical stripes the only let vertical light waves enter, and block the horizontal waves. They block out 100% of harmful UVA and UVB light. Why are polarised lenses important?
Any light or glare that enters your eyes in harsh manner is not good for your overall eye health. By reducing glare, polarised lenses are fantastic at reducing eye strain where reflective surfaces are present - think by the sea, driving for a long time, in sunny places. And best of all, polarised lenses are easy to come by and add to your own prescription, so unless a medical professional tells you otherwise, there's no excuse not to add them to your existing glasses-wearing routine! To find out more about integrating polarised lenses into your lifestyle, speak to your optometrist! _____
