Taking Care of Your Eyes in Spring

Allergy and hay fever season is upon us! It can be a trying time for those who suffer from seasonal allergies, especially as the pollen in the air affects the sinuses, nose and eyes. Before we get into some tips about how to care for your eyes during Spring, here are some of the most common indications of allergic reactions:

  • Redness of eyes

  • Itching

  • Swelling or puffiness

  • White discharge from the eyes

  • Teary or watery eyes

  • Soreness or pain in one or both the eyes

So, how do you go about avoid any of these nasty and uncomfortable symptoms? Here are some of our top tips for eye care this spring season:

  • Wear Sunglasses to help protect your eyes from pollen and dust in the air. Plus, sunglasses help protect your eyes from extremely harmful UV rays, which is important even more so in the hot and sunny months.

  • Wear glasses instead of contacts to avoid pollen and dust build up on the surface of your eye. Glasses will also act as a protective barrier for your eyes.

  • Keep your hands and face clean so to avoid any pollen or dust entering your eyes (and nose!).

  • Keep your eyes moist as a sunny spring day can be responsible for causing dry eye. You can apply artificial tear drops if your eyes become dry and uncomfortable.

  • See an optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam ahead of the season - they'll be able to help you identify any potential allergy triggers and offer ways to alleviate your symptoms.
