How To Make Working From Home Eye-Friendly

Updated: Feb 11, 2022

Working from home has become a twenty-first century norm, but it isn’t exactly a norm for our bodies (and especially our eyes!). We understand that working from the couch with your feet up is more alluring than an ergonomic chair at your desk! However, as our #WFH days continue on, it’s absolutely essential for you to stop and assess your workstation for long term physical health.

Here are our top ways to create an eye-friendly Working-From-Home set-up:

Invest in Ergonomic Furniture and Equipment

Don’t be discouraged by the word ‘invest’. We’re not suggesting you spend beyond your means in office equipment, but we do suggest sourcing some furniture and equipment to create an ergonomic workspace. The absolute essentials come down to:

- Chair – ideally height adjustable so that your feet rest flat on the floor. Choose something that is comfortable and supports your spinal curves.

- Desk – spacious to accommodate any necessary work equipment. Your desk should be clear underneath and provide adequate room for your feet.

- Key objects – this may include stationary, a telephone, chargers and printing materials. Keep them close to your body to minimise reaching.

- Computer or Monitor – place your monitor directly in front of you at an arm’s length away. Adjust the height and tilt of the screen so that your back and neck remain straight and upwards. If you work from a laptop, raise it on a stand so it sits at eye level too.

Space to Perfection

Spacing is everything when it comes to a workstation. Simple adjustments can make all the difference to how you feel at the end of the workday. The most important placements to be spatially aware of are:

- Are my feet touching the ground?

- Is my screen at eye level, an arm’s length away?

- Is my back and neck straight?

- Am I comfortable?

If you can answer ‘yes’ to all of the above then your working from home station is set up to perfection!

Designate a Working Area

No, we aren’t talking about the couch! It’s important to create a designated work area where your computer, files and any other work resources live. Fill your work nook with ergonomic furniture and schedule time to actually be there and working productively. This isn’t only beneficial for your ergonomic wellbeing, but also for your mental health and quality of output.
