Just like your body needs exercise, nourishing food, sunlight and the rest, your eyes need regular healthy practices so they can stay healthy and optimal for your lifetime! Here are some of our top eye care habits to put into regular practice.
Your eyes are what you eat!
Healthy eating is a no-brainer when it comes to health and longevity. It also applies to your vision. Eye health stems from your diet, and some important nutrients for eyes include Vitamin A, C and E, omega-3 fatty acids and zinc. You'll find these nutrients in foods like oily fish, green leafy vegetables, nuts, eggs and fruits. As a general rule of thumb, most of your plate should be filled with vegetables and fresh, plant-based foods!
Protect your eyes from the sun
All creatures need sunlight, but too much sun can be extremely dangerous for your skin and eyes. Luckily for your eyes, protection from the sun is simple and easy. All you need is a pair of sunglasses that protect against 99-100% of UV-A and UV-B rays. Your optometrist will be able to help you select the right pair for your eyes.
Avoid smoking
This one is a no brainer! Tobacco and smoking in general isn't good for your body or health. Smoking is also a culprit of damaging the optic nerve, cataracts and macular degeneration.
Minimise Screen Time
Many desk workers know that screen time is not outside of the norm, but our eyes certainly weren't designed to be staring at a lit screen all day! Try and take regular screen breaks to avoid vision symptoms like dry eye or eye strain. We have some handy blogs and information about eyes and screens in our blog archive.
