Eye Twitching: what causes it and when does it become serious?

Updated: Feb 11, 2022

If you’ve experienced a twitchy eye, you are not alone! Almost everyone has felt the involuntary twinge from their eye at least once in their lifetime. In most cases, it’s absolutely nothing to be concerned about. However, there are a few instances in which some extra attention should be given to a twitching eye.

There are plenty of triggers that can set off a twitching eye, such as: stress, fatigue, coffee, alcohol, certain medications, smoking, bright lights, or irritation of the eyelids. Usually, a twitch will last only for a short period of time and stop on its own. It shouldn’t feel painful or strained.

In some cases, your eye twitch might be more than just a small reaction or irritation. The list below includes some instances in which we direct you to seeking immediate optometry help:

  • The twitching persists for over 7 days

  • The twitching causes an eyelid to fully close

  • The twitching affects your vision

  • The twitching causes other facial muscles to spasm

  • Redness, swelling or eye discharge is apparent

Trust your gut if something about your eye twitch doesn’t feel right. Like we said, in most cases, it’s harmless. But in case it isn’t, it’s good to get your eye checked ASAP. Get in touch with Zephyr for an at-home exam and we can refer you on any next steps if your twitch is causing issues.
