Eye-Friendly Makeup

Updated: Feb 11, 2022

Hidden nasties exist in everything these days, and make-up and beauty products are no exception. Although most products are designed for sensitive eyes and will not cause irritation, it’s still good to be wary of what you put on and around your eyes.

When shopping for eye makeup, it’s best to choose brands that are made specifically with sensitive eyes in mind. These products and brands will usually market the fact, so they’ll be easy to recognise. Most brands will also state if they’ve been dermatologically tested and approved, too; these are the products worth investing in.

On the ingredients list, be wary of any long and complicated ingredients (they’re generally the nasty ones!). Some of the ingredients to avoid are colour additives, parabens, fragrances, talc, sulphates, preservatives, bismuth oxychloride, and fragrances.

If you’re shopping for new makeup products, we suggest taking a sample home first before buying. Most large cosmetic retailers will provide you with a sample. By testing a small amount, you can monitor your eyes’ reaction to the product. If your reaction is adverse, you will know to avoid it in future (plus, you’ve saved your dollars!).

If you do experience a bad eye reaction to a makeup product, remove it as quickly as possible with a gentle remover and water. Flush out your eye and make sure that none of the makeup residue remains. Avoid rubbing or itching the eye. If symptoms persist and worsen, visit your optometrist (or doctor, in the case of emergency) as soon as possible.
