We sometimes get asked if wearing glasses can actually make eyesight worse or weaken eyes. It's a good question, but truth be told, this question arises from some myths surrounding what glasses do (or rather, don't do!) to your vision.
Many people wear glasses to correct their vision. Depending on your eyes and the sight condition you have, custom lenses are fit by your optometrist and your glasses will correct the issue.
Some people believe that by wearing glasses and relying on them to correct vision will cause them to become lazy and actually worsen or cause vision conditions. This belief... is not correct. Wearing your prescription glasses will aid your vision if they're properly and regularly assessed. It may feel a bit strange once you're used to wearing them to have them off (and actually, this is where this myth comes from!). Sometimes after you've grown used to wearing your glasses, it can feel quite disorientating to have them off. Your eye muscles are also very relaxed when your glasses are on, but having them off means your eyes may need to readjust and strain to refocus without them.
It's important to note that any strain or mild discomfort you feel without your glasses are not a sign that your glasses are worsening your eyes. It's a sign that they're working! They're helping you see the world clearly and keep your eyes healthy, which is the most important thing. _____
