We think eyes are pretty awesome (you can probably tell), and part of our mission is making eye health accessible to everyone. And what better way to add to the knowledge bank with some fun facts to make you love your eyes and what they can do even more! Here are our top 17 eye facts:



1. The eye is the fastest muscle in your body, which is why when something happens quickly, we say ‘in the blink of an eye!’


2. You actually see with your brain, not your eyes. Our eyes function like a camera, capturing light and sending data back to the brain, where the image is comprehended.


3. Red eye in a photo is merely the light from the flash bouncing off the capillaries in your eyes


4. The average human blinks 4,200,000 times per year


5. Eyes begin to develop in the womb at just two weeks after conception


6. The most common eye colour is brown


7. Diabetes is the number one cause of blindness amongst adults in the United Kingdom


8. Having eyes that are two different colours is called Heterochromia


9. Eyes remain the exact same size from when you are born
